Rock Climbing

Great friendly, yet challenging cliffs to try out rock climbing for the first time.

Perhaps you’ve rock climbed indoors? Rock climbing outdoors is brilliant.

A great day with Stu developing lead climbing and top roping skills. He found us the only dry crag in the Lakes which was a bonus! Stu listened to where we were up to in our outdoor climbing experience and tailored a day which took us out of our comfort zone but developed our skills and confidence to go out and lead easy single/multi-pitch climbs on our own. Perfect day and great, supportive training! Thanks!

August 2020

I booked a day climbing for my Son (15), who has been doing well on the indoor walls but have never climbed outside.

Stu gave us a fantastic day out. The first climb he worked out what we were capable of, and worked from there.
Stu was happy to climb with my son, while I took photographs from the descent route.
We got a full days climbing – without any delays for tea breaks and the like.
At every stage of the day, we felt safe and well looked after.
Brilliant.

A friend and I booked a morning climbing session having done next to no climbing before. We both had a brilliant time! Stu was a great instructor, and the climbing was awesome. I would recommend this for anyone wanting to try climbing and will definitely be going again myself.

Just spent two days with instructor Al in the Lake District. I’m a timid 60 yr old nanny (!), along with my granddaughter (13), who’s done a little bit of climbing & wanted more, & Grandad who loves climbing, & a climbing friend. So quite a mixed group! Al was just brilliant – knowledgeable, friendly, encouraging, teaching each of us at a level that really helped. He was also great fun to be with. I couldn’t believe how fortunate we were to have him. Thanks Al. And love the quote about the cheese….

“Rock Climbing is such a fantastic activity…. an entirely personal challenge that requires the whole teams support in belaying and encouraging.”

Rock Climbing is what we do!!!!

With the highest UK qualifications in rock climbing and mountaineering, we don’t just offer basic taster sessions.

We’ll coach and give you the best introduction to rock climbing you can have in a half-day session.  We know how important your time is and being able to introduce you to this brilliant sport is so exciting.

As a family, we really enjoy being out rock climbing and have climbed all over Europe. We know how it feels to reach the top and also the challenge it takes to get there. Everyone’s experience is different and with over 20 years experience of taking groups rock climbing, we are used to working with all sorts of people and helping them have a great time on the rock.

This rock climbing page is where we offer half-day “try-it-out” sessions. As rock climbing is one of our main areas of expertise, please view our Rock Climbing Courses and Private Guiding for more technical training and coaching.

You don’t need any experience or prior knowledge to have a great half-day session rock climbing. We will teach you all you need to know for your session including how to use harnesses, tie in and belay each other.

Perhaps you have climbed indoors and want to have a go outdoors. That’s great. We rig all of the climbs ourselves so we can set the level of difficulty from easy to harder depending on what you want.

All routes are between 10 and 20m long so you’ll get to try several different ones during your session.

The best venues are in Langdale, near Ambleside. Also, there are some great climbs near Keswick which we incorporate into a full day of activities.

The best venues in the Lake District are in Langdale near Ambleside, or in Borrowdale near Keswick.

If booking a half-day rock climbing session we will meet in Langdale at the National Trust Stickle Ghyll car park.

If you are booking rock climbing in the morning and Stickle GhyllChurch Beck or Abseiling for the afternoon, meet as above.

If you are booking an all-day rock climbing and Stoney Croft ghyll scrambling or Stoney Croft canyoning we will meet you in Borrowdale.

We will send you directions on a PDF at point of booking.

Half-day sessions run as follows:
Morning 9:30 am to 12:30 pm – Afternoon 1:30 pm to 4:30pm. That’s three full hours of activity.

Full-day sessions run as follows:
9:30 am to 4:30 pm. That’s seven full hours of activity.

We realise how valuable your time is and this reflects in our attention to giving you a full session. We always get to the meeting venue early, arrange our kit and make sure we are ready to go. This enables us to optimise the contact time with you, giving you real value for money and attention to your experience.

Half-day activities are really fun and do combine very well with other activities. E.g. many people book rock climbing or abseiling in the morning and ghyll scrambling or canyoning in the afternoon.

These half-day combinations and our all-day sessions can be viewed here: Mix n Match options on this page here.
